Where should you stay in Cyprus?

For a varied holiday with a car, we recommend a traditional village base in Tochni, between Larnaca and Limassol. For a trip centred on one sandy bay, a beach resort may be more convenient. Paphos suits western archaeology and coast; Troodos suits a mountain-focused stay.

We run Cyprus Villages in Tochni, so our recommendation comes with that perspective. The useful question is whether our location matches your plans. A central southern base can reduce moving between hotels, but it cannot make every part of Cyprus a short drive away.

Choose the places you most want to visit, how often you want to drive and what you want outside your door in the evening. Then pick your accommodation area.

Cyprus accommodation areas at a glance

Area A good fit for The trade-off
Tochni and nearby villages A quieter traditional stay, food and varied southern day trips A car is useful; beaches are a drive away.
Larnaca Airport convenience, seafront walks and a city base Less of a rural village setting.
Limassol Restaurants, old-town evenings and coastal city life Traffic and a busier atmosphere.
Paphos Archaeology, western coast and a longer western stay Longer journeys to eastern destinations.
Ayia Napa and Protaras Sandy bays and a beach-focused holiday Seasonal crowds and a longer journey to western areas.
Troodos villages Walking, cooler high ground and mountain scenery Winding roads and more time to the coast.

Tochni: a traditional base between Larnaca and Limassol

Tochni gives you a different rhythm from a large resort: stone houses, village lanes and an apartment to settle into. Cyprus Villages has been a family business since 1988, combining traditional accommodation with the hospitality of Tochni Tavern.

This location suits travellers who want to alternate coastal outings, nearby history, city days and the countryside. Larnaca and Limassol lie in different directions along the southern road network; Choirokoitia, Kalavasos and Lefkara give you options beyond the beaches.

The practical condition is transport. Hire a car if varied excursions are central to your holiday. High Troodos routes, Paphos and Akamas require more planning and driving; avoid a schedule built on the idea that everything is within an hour.

Larnaca: an easy coastal city choice

Larnaca works well for airport access, seafront walks and a holiday where cafes and urban services are nearby. Finikoudes, St Lazarus Church and the old town make a manageable combination for a city day.

It can suit travellers who do not want to hire a car for their whole stay, provided the places they want to visit fit available transport. Check the actual route and schedule rather than assuming a bus will serve every attraction.

If you prefer an apartment in a village and are comfortable driving, Tochni offers a quieter alternative while keeping Larnaca as a possible day out.

Limassol: restaurants and lively coastal evenings

Choose Limassol if a busy seafront, a broad restaurant scene and evenings around the old town are central to your holiday. The marina and Molos promenade offer an easy framework for an urban walk.

City driving and parking can take time. Match the accommodation’s location to your evening plans, particularly if you want to walk rather than drive after dinner.

From Tochni, you can visit Limassol during the day and return to a smaller village for the night. That suits a different holiday from staying in the centre of the city.

Paphos: archaeology and the western coast

Paphos is a strong choice for travellers who want regular access to its archaeological sites and western coastal outings. Kato Paphos and the Tombs of the Kings reward more attention than a hurried stop.

It is possible to plan a full Paphos day from Tochni, but an itinerary focused heavily on Paphos and Akamas may work better with several nights in the west. Let your interests decide rather than treating one base as the answer to every trip.

Beach resorts or mountain villages?

Ayia Napa and Protaras suit travellers who want sandy bays to be the centre of their holiday. Choose the specific resort and accommodation for the atmosphere you prefer; the experience changes with the season and exact location.

Troodos villages suit walking, wine and mountain scenery. Distances on a map can be misleading on winding roads, and winter conditions need checking. A mountain stay is useful when you want to spend several days on higher ground.

For a mixed trip, Tochni gives you traditional accommodation with southern coast access by car. Compare the beaches and choose realistic walks before finalising your base.

What to check before booking an apartment

Confirm the exact apartment layout, steps and parking arrangements, and the amenities and meal plan included in the rate. Traditional houses differ, so avoid assuming that every room has the same terrace, view or access.

At Cyprus Villages, ask us which apartment fits your needs and how to plan your arrival. We would rather help you choose a suitable stay than promise one identical experience for everyone.

For couples, families or a longer visit, space to unpack and an easy meal at Tochni Tavern can be a good reason to choose a village base. Read what a Cyprus Villages stay is like for the accommodation story.

Where to stay in Cyprus: your questions

What is the best area for a first visit to Cyprus?

For a varied trip with a car, consider Tochni or another southern base between your main destinations. For a beach-only visit, prioritise the bay you want; for a city break without much driving, choose a coastal city.

Do I need a car in Tochni?

A car is the practical choice if you want to visit beaches, cities and countryside from a village base. Arrange transport before arrival if you are not driving.

Should I split my stay between east and west?

Consider it for a longer trip with several western and eastern excursions. A split stay reduces repeated long journeys but adds packing and check-in time.

Are all apartment rates bed and breakfast?

No rate should be assumed to include a meal plan. Check the specific booking terms and contact the property about breakfast or half-board options.
